OUR STORY

From home church to shoplot

In 2010, The Parochial Church Council of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Johor Bahru began a conversation to explore another church planting effort. The Church had already launched a Bahasa-speaking congregation consisting mainly of believers from Sarawak. They have moved to 2 separate premises at Pasir Gudang and Skudai.

We discussed various possible areas of ministries, including Skudai and Ulu Tiram area.  It was then decided that we will explore Ulu Tiram as we have a few families that were residing in that area.

In 2011, a weekly evening prayer meeting was held at the home of a brother at Desa Cemerlang. By the 2nd half of that year, we began to have a weekly evening service. We then realise that to grow the ministry, we will need to have a proper place of meeting other than someone’s home.

The Lord led us to a new commercial area at Jalan Gaya 1. When we moved there in January 2012, we were one of the few that had started “shop”.  This area was selected as it has a significant population base with several large housing estates and shopping malls, such as Aeon, Ikea and Tesco (now Lotus).

OUR STORY

From shoplot to Missionary District

Rev. Tan Meng Poo served as the Non-Stipend Minister for the first 5 years, followed subsequently by Deaconess Chin Kho Nee and Marianne Kong.  In 2024, Rev. Meng Poo took over the helm after Dss. Marianne got her transfer to Klang Valley due to marriage plans at the end of 2023.

On 9 November 2025, the Bishop of the Dioceses of West Malaysia, Bishop Steven Abbarow, inaugurated Hosanna Anglican Church as a Missionary District and licensed Rev. Tan Meng Poo as the Priest-in-charge.

The focus of the church is on sharing the Gospel, the good news about Jesus Christ, to be a welcoming community of Christ followers who seek to know Jesus, love Jesus and serve Jesus.

Our Mission Statement

As a Church we are desirous to be Gospel centered, mission focused and raising disciples for Jesus Christ.

The Gospel is the power of salvation to all who believes (Romans 1:6). We are sinners saved by the grace of God through Christ’s death on the Cross.

It is this work of Christ at the Cross that enables those who follow him, to receive the gift of eternal life – a relationship that begins now in knowing Jesus (John 17:3) and through eternity.

We proclaim the Gospel message:
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. (1 Corinthians 15:3-5 ESV).

That mission is both local and overseas. We are called to pray, give and some to go to the mission field. But mission is also to be a good neighbour to housing area, our friends at school or college, our colleagues at the workplace and anyone whom the Lord bring to our us or whom we interact with.

Disciples are simply followers of Christ, called to study God’s Word, the Bible.  To apply the Word to our everyday lives in steps of obedience to God’s calling in our lives, whatever and wherever that may be.

Our Confessions

The Anglican Church subscribes to the Book of Common Prayer, the Creeds (Apostle’s, Nicene and Athanasius) and the 39 Articles as its theological stand.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
      creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
      He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      was crucified, died, and was buried;
      he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
      He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
      the holy catholic* church,
      the communion of saints,
      the forgiveness of sins,
      the resurrection of the body,
      and the life everlasting. Amen.

*catholic means universal.

We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is,
seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the father. He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
